Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic drainage, also known as Lymphatic drainage massage or MLD is a manual technique that is used to help manage swelling in the lymph nodes.

Swelling generally occurs in the arms and legs, MLD can help by gently massaging the areas that are not affected by the swelling to allow the congested lymph fluid to have somewhere to travel.  A light pressure is used to stimulate the lymphatic capillaries.

Benefits of MLD

  • Improved circulation
  • Improved lymphatic flow
  • Detoxification
  • Stress management
  • Boosting immunity
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Increases energy
  • Helps with recovery

MLD is generally often used to relieve lymphoedema following cancer treatments or lymph node removal. Other conditions that can benefit post-surgery are people suffering with fibromyalgia, sinus congestion, lipedema, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic venous insufficiency.  Unfortunately, there is no cure for lymphoedema but there are ways for people to manage and boost their lymphatic system, such as Exercise, Elastic bandages, Diet (Vegetables and fruit), Hydration (WATER) and limiting processed food.

Risks with MLD

Lymphatic drainage massage is a safe treatment for relieving lymphedema; however, it is not suitable for anyone with

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Acute infections
  • Kidney failure
  • Cardiovascular issues

Always talk to your healthcare provider if you are concerned about your health or have any of the conditions listed above.

Monthly treatments are recommended to help maintain and manage a healthy lymphatic flow. For post surgeries and recovery, treatments should be weekly, to help recovery and maintenance before extending the periods out to monthly.

There may be side effects post-treatment, these side effects are a natural part of the detoxification process. Side effects may include fatigue, frequent urination, headaches, nausea, and achiness.

These symptoms should last less than 24 hours. It is always good to talk to your healthcare provider about how to manage these symptoms.
